Mini Review:
Became 14 and was harder to come back!!
Bubble Gum made me start chewing on to a imaginary bubble gum and tracing myself back when I was 14; That funny feeling of not understanding what is love but having the urge of venturing into the same. No Facebook, No SMS, No Cable and No Mobile...

Became 14 and was harder to come back!!
Bubble Gum made me start chewing on to a imaginary bubble gum and tracing myself back when I was 14; That funny feeling of not understanding what is love but having the urge of venturing into the same. No Facebook, No SMS, No Cable and No Mobile phone yet so many possibilities of getting in touch..Going to friends place for telephone, putting ink on paper which was known as writing sometime back and hiding it in a comic book… phew!!!
The Movie starts with a background narration making sure that the 2011 multiplex crowd are ready to go back into flashback. Then comes Vedant (Delzad Hilwale) a 14 years old boy who is confused about almost everything but at the same time is open to almost everything; I felt an instant connection to my teenage days; Few minutes into the movie In comes Vedant’s ‘GF’ (yes they used this word at that time) Jenny (Apoorva Arora) she is the one for whom Vedant wants to wear a shiny shirt and irritates his mother (Tanvi Azmi) to tuck the button on. Jenny is the one for whom Vedant wants to learn Piano lessons something he hates like hell; Like young Darsheel Safary learning mathematics in Taare Zameen Par. And yes this movie also had its villain move over Amrish, Shakti and Gulshan here comes Ratan (Suraj Singh) the 15 year old Neighbor of Vedant who challenges Vedant for winning pretty Jenny’s heart.
So far doesn’t this seem to be a story line which has be done to death a zillion times?? or better metaphor would be - “Story has been done as much as cash being stashed in Swiss banks by certain khadi clad people.” But naah in the time of smart phones, smart tablets and smart cars we have smart plots as well; In comes Vedant’s older brother Vidur (Sohail Lakhani) now get ready to experience another kind of emotion which many of us have endured and endeavored between two brothers. Vidur is coming back for “Holi”days from his hostel; Mom (Tanvi Azmi) and Dad (Sachin Kedekar) are super keen to receiving their Elder Son.
But Vedant is miffed, super duper miffed as he had figured it all out in terms of winning the challenge from Ratan, He would be doing joint studies, joint piano classes etc. but his elder brother had to come and spoil it all as all attention was now diverted to him. Vedant has to take his brother along to play, to shop etc. His parents have given him responsibility of his elder brother; why? We may think because Vidur is hearing impaired and needs help to communicate to everyone; At least that is what his mom and dad think; but as the story unfolds people will understand and acknowledge that he is the most sensible member of the family (Including mom and dad); Reminds us of movies like koshish, khamoshi etc.
So Holi being the backdrop and collecting wood as the main adventure we find Vedant getting into trouble several times and brother Vidur bailing him out. But Vedant has so much anger inside him that he invariable everytime vents it out to Vidur only. Towards the end it is Vidur who strategises Ratan’s downfall and also advocates for Vedant. The same Vedant who hides his hearing aide batteries, The same Vedant who steals from his brothers wallet. But kudos to the direction which makes you feel for both the brothers and somehow justifies Vedant’s actions as well. There was a beautiful movie called Halo which used the crisp screenplay to feel for the young girl. Also I have the urge to mention Blue Umbrella and Masoom where in human emotions are the main catalysts for the plot.
All in all the Movie is very nice but is not meant for the Ready Bhai fans nor for Fast Five dudes but people who like to watch emotions play out. Honest Performances by the entire cast; Good Direction by debutant Sanjivan Lal. For Parents of Teenagers, People like me (early 30’s) who would like to relate their teenaged memories should give this a must watch.
In times where Ragini’s MMS, Sheila’s Youth, Munni’s Infamousness and Delhi’s D K Bose running are USP’s it is good to see Bubble Gum being released as an ode for honest work. Hey but what is an honest work without a Chillar Party Item song by Ranbir or Perfect Marketing by Mamu (Aamir Khan) for Delhi Belly
Finally to summarize this is a must watch once its on Television; But with so many big budget Hollywood movies releasing chances of being a box office hit is distant.
Vedant is 14. He has been growing up alone like a single child because his elder brother Vidur, 16, is deaf and studying far away from home in a boarding school for children like him. For the parents –Mukund and Sudha, Vidur becomes the focus of their concern and their affection. Vedant is taken for granted on the account of being ‘normal’. Vedant begins resenting this situation. Life for Vedant suddenly looks up when a pretty girl Jenny, also 14, moves in the neighborhood and he begins wooing her secretly. To his horror, competition starts brewing...
