The music will draw you into action and the action will have you watch the screen with bated breath. This is the fabulous movie from Steven Siderbergh.
Jackie Chan in 1911 is no longer who he was in Drunken Master, and Jet Li hasn't been seen on the screen for a while (His Sorcerer And The White Snake did not receive any release here, neither did Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate).
The last white girl martial artist who was supposed to be 'the' next best thing was Cynthia Rothrock and that is really an old hat. Michelle Yeoh was last seen two years ago in the Reign Of Assassins (again, not exactly anything that came our way). Boys stared at the screens when Angelina Jolie pretended to be action woman (Lara Croft, Salt and so on), but it was just teenage fantasy type thing.
Now repeat after me: Gina Carano.
Gina Carano.
Gina Carano.
Yes, the one who kicks serious butt in Haywire. She jumps from one roof to another, fights machinegun carrying cops, wears a dress, does not need to carry a gun, slidesSteven Soderbergh gave us a sneezefearfest with his Purell sponsored Contagion. So I must confess I entered the theater with much trepidation. But just like every other person watching, whether they were Soderbergh fans or no, I watched the movie with my jaw dropped on the floor. This action-packed movie is so brilliant and the heroine so amazingly natural that you tend to pinch yourself ever so often to check if you are actually watching the fabulous hand to hand combat and the one kicking butt is actually a girl.
And she's not the female version of Arnold Schwarzenegger. She is very very female. Someone who looks good when kissing Channing Tatum, when wearing a little black dress and walking arm in arm with Michael Fassbender, and also when she's daddy's tough little Marine at home. There's Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewan MacGregor and also Bill Paxton (as her dad).
And despite this fabulous line up of stars, Gina Carano outshines them all. Steven Soderbergh has found us the next action hero. And her name is Gina Carano.
Please see this film. Do not miss it. The music, the cinematography, the story, the characters, the action is all so good, you will have a good time.
